A BRIEF INTRODUCTION TO AYURVEDIC THERAPY

Ayurveda is the oldest form of healing knowledge in the world, originating in India over 5000 years ago. According to Ayurveda, each individual inherits a unique composition of three doshas or elements. When the doshas are in balance, health and beauty are a natural result.

The recent arrival of Ayurveda in the West has revolutionized the way we approach stress reduction, skin care and beauty treatment. Increasingly popular due to its gentle, holistic approach to health and beauty, this ancient body of wisdom provides a “natural choice” for individual seeking a holistic approach to health and wellness.

Literally translated as “the science of life,” Ayurveda aims to promote longevity through treatments that tune the body to a higher state of physical being that brings clarity and peace to the mind. Treatment is prepared using observation, touch and a questionnaire about the client's lifestyle and health practices. This overview allows for the creation of a customized treatment that adapts the treatment to the client's particular vikruti (or presenting condition).

Ayurvedic treatment concentrates on developing and maintaining three types of beauty: Outer Beauty (body and skin), Inner Beauty (focusing on the positive qualities of the mind) and Secret Beauty (a combination of Outer and Inner Beauty, and the client's personal blueprint). Techniques for maintaining the respective types of beauty are varied, and typical Ayurvedic treatments achieve stimulation of mind and body through a combination of herbal oils, powders, massage, colour, aromas, sound and meditation.

Based on the belief that the human body is composed of physical, mental and spiritual energy, practitioners of Ayurvedic believe that three doshas maintain the body and govern all physiological and physico-chemical activities within. The doshas are: Vata, the most powerful of the doshas, being the life-force itself and governing all movement; Pitta, which governs heat, temperature and all chemical reactions; and Kapha, which maintains substance, weight and coherence in the body. Each person is composed of a unique blend of doshas that is remains constant throughout life. Ayurvedic treatment is intended to maintain this unique balance of energies, which can become unbalanced based on external influences on the body.
